What is the difference between manual and automated trading?

I’m trying to understand the practical difference between manual trading and automated systems. I know that software can follow predefined rules and potentially execute trades without someone having to enter every order manually, but I’m wondering how different the underlying strategies really are. For example, could a strategy that is normally followed by a person also be turned into an automated system? I’m also curious about whether the main advantage is simply speed and consistency or whether there are other important differences. I don’t have a programming background, so I’m looking for a relatively simple explanation rather than something aimed at professional developers.

The same basic strategy can sometimes be used manually or converted into a set of rules that software can execute. A useful introduction to algorithmic trading helped me understand this distinction better. With manual trading, the person interprets the conditions and decides when to act, while an automated system can apply predefined instructions consistently. That can reduce repetitive work and potentially improve execution speed, but it doesn’t automatically make the underlying strategy better. The quality of the rules, the data and the implementation still matter. Some strategies are also difficult to automate because they depend heavily on subjective judgment. So I’d think of automation mainly as another way of implementing a strategy rather than assuming it guarantees better results.
