Getting lost in product codes before things finally clicked
I ran into this whole mess of codes when I was setting up my first few listings and thought it would be straightforward. Instead, I kept seeing different labels in Seller Central and on packaging requirements, and none of it made sense at first.

I’ve definitely been there, and honestly the confusion around amazon product codes is one of those things most sellers learn the hard way. At first, everything looks similar and you assume it’s all just internal tracking, but each code serves a very specific purpose. What helped me was slowing down and actually understanding who uses which code and at what stage. For example, ASINs are public-facing and tied to the product page, SKUs are your own internal identifiers, and FNSKUs matter a lot once you’re sending inventory into FBA. UPCs add another layer because they often come from manufacturers and can cause issues if they’re reused incorrectly. I stopped guessing after I read a clear breakdown of the difference between ASIN, SKU, FNSKU, and UPC. What I liked is that it explains how these codes interact instead of treating them as isolated terms. Since then, I’ve been way more careful with labeling and listing creation, and I’ve avoided a few costly mistakes just by double-checking which code Amazon is actually referring to. My advice is to set up a simple system early and document your SKUs clearly, because once you scale, fixing code-related issues becomes a headache.
